The children in the Dollars for Change after school program understand that generous donations keep their activities running. While most of our projects center around the issues in their own community, the kids wanted to do something more to spread this generosity to other parts of South Africa. Thus, the "Pay it Forward Project". For the past month, the after school group (nic-named by the kids as "The Social Club") have been creating beautiful beaded bracelets, earrings, keychains and candle holders that can be sold to raise money for another community in need. They discussed and researched ideas, and decided on their first goal - buying a Hippo Water Roller for a creche in the Eastern Cape. Hippo Rollers (www.hipporoller.org) carry up to 90 liters of water and allow for an easy alternative to collecting small amounts of water in buckets several times a day. They have a positive impact on the social, health and economic aspects of life.
On February 27th, four representatives from the group spent the day at the Plett Main Street Market for our first day of sales - Shaneen Malatji, Juzeem Simon, Angelique Barnardo, and Melissa Mbongwe. The kids did a wonderful job staying organized with their sales sheet and explaining to customers what the project was all about. One Hippo Roller costs about R750 and by the end of our day, we had sold enough crafts to reach R760! That's the first goal accomplished and on to the next.....
A very special thanks to everyone who came to support us in our efforts!
