Still on school holiday, members of the DFC after school group have been visiting the village creche twice a week. Each meeting has a theme - the first was friendship, the second was heroes, and the third was animals. Group members work in pairs, and each pair has its own group of little ones. The meeting starts with a discussion based on the theme followed by a fun activity. While they've been provided with guidelines and ideas for each discussion, it's been wonderful to see how the older kids expand on each topic differently; taking pride in this new leadership position. The children at the creche never say goodbye without lots of hugs for the older kids, looking forward to their next meeting.
The video below is from our friendship theme meeting at the creche. After the group discussion, the leaders helped each child write their name and construct their link. I asked Jasmine to explain to the kids why we were putting all the links together. She had all the kids hold hands and compared our paper links to friends holding hands. The Xhosa teachers then explained the links to the few Xhosa-speaking children by saying no matter what race you are in village; black, white, or colored, we are all ONE.
